Fifth place in the Champions League, they hope in Italy

While the current edition of the Champions League has resumed, attention has also shifted to next season and the competition for the additional place awarded based on the federation coefficient.

Under the new UEFA regulations, from the 2023/24 season, the two federations with the best seasonal rankings will benefit from an additional Champions League place for the team finishing fifth in the championship standings. In the first year, Italy and Germany benefited, while this season the additional places have gone to England and Spain.

The data shows that federations with fewer teams participating in European competitions have an advantage in gaining the extra place. This is a positive development for Italy, which in the current season will have only seven teams in the European arena (4 in the Champions League, 2 in the Europa League and 1 in the Conference League).

The annual coefficient is calculated as the average of the points earned by all participating teams of a federation, so early eliminations have a negative impact. This makes it important not only to qualify, but also to the performance of each team representing a federation.
