The national team is "shocked" at the World Cup, the captain is accused of rape

The Cape Verde national team is facing a complicated situation off the field in the midst of its historic participation in the World Cup.

Captain Ryan Mendes is under investigation after a rape allegation by a Brazilian woman. The alleged incident reportedly took place in New Zealand during a tour in March.

The woman, who worked as a translator for the Cape Verde national team, claims that the footballer entered her room, physically attacked her and then raped her.

Auckland police have launched an investigation into the incident. FIFA said it is in contact with New Zealand authorities and is monitoring developments.

All this happens at a time when Cape Verde has reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time.
