Latvia-Albania duel, UEFA chooses the referee who was punched

Albania will play its next match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers away against Latvia.

The challenge will be judged by Turkish referee Halil Umut Meler, known for the violent incident he suffered in December 2023, when he was punched in the face by the Ankaragucu president.

His assistants will be Kerem Ersoy and ?brahim Çaglar Uyarçan, with Oguzhan Çak?r as the fourth official.

Two German referees have been assigned to the VAR system: Harm Osmers and Daniel Schlager. The referee observer for this match will be Italian Gianluca Rocchi.

Albania currently sit second in Group K with four points, after a win over Andorra and a draw with Serbia. The Rossoneri will be looking to win to stay in contention for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
