The best universities in the world for 2026 in every field of study

Even the world's best higher education institutions have their strengths and weaknesses. That's why in 2025 Times Higher Education published a ranking of the most outstanding universities for each field of study, to complement its annual list of the best universities overall.

As in 2025, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was ranked as the best university for arts and humanities, business and economics, and social sciences.

The University of Oxford, named the world's best institution overall in October, also remained the best place to study computer science and medicine, while Harvard continues to be the top choice for engineering and life sciences.

However, while Stanford University has maintained its position as the best university for education and law, it is no longer the leading institution for psychology. In 2026, that title will go to the University of Cambridge. Below is the full list of:
