Scientists around the world, including the UK Met Office, the University of East Anglia and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, have published their data for 2025, revealing that it was the third consecutive year with temperatures more than 1.4C above pre-industrial levels.
Last year was 1.41C above the 19th century baseline, following the record-breaking heat of 2024 and 2023, according to Hadcrut5 data collected by the Met Office, UEA and NCAS.
The data puts the average temperature over the past three years at 1.47C above 1850 to 1900, while Copernicus monitoring found they averaged more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
Professor Tim Osborn, director of UEA's Climate Research Unit, said the previous two years had been made even hotter by a natural climate change in the Pacific Ocean, the El Nino pattern, which added about 0.1 degrees Celsius to global temperatures.
This weakened in 2025, revealing a clearer picture of underlying, human-driven warming./CNA
