WHO: Increase taxes on sugary drinks and alcohol, risk of diseases

The World Health Organization, in its latest report published this Tuesday, has urged governments around the world to increase taxes on sugary drinks and alcohol to reduce the rising rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

The WHO warned that low taxes that are out of line with inflation are allowing these products to remain affordable, while health systems struggle to cope with preventable diseases.

The WHO argues that taxes on alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages are one of the most effective tools governments have to reduce consumption, because higher prices can reduce, delay or even completely prevent alcohol and sugar consumption.

"Health taxes are one of the most powerful tools we have to promote health and prevent disease," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general.

The reports come as the WHO urges countries to increase and redesign taxes as part of its new initiative, which aims to increase the real prices of tobacco, alcohol and sugary drinks by 2035. /CNA
