New UN study: 2/3 of journalists report cases of online violence and digital

More than two-thirds of female journalists, human rights defenders and activists have reported online violence, with over 40% saying they have faced real-world attacks linked to digital abuse, a new study published by the UN has found.

The report, titled "The Turning Point," focuses on an escalation of violence targeting such women, coupled with the rise of social media and artificial intelligence, and draws on the contributions of more than 6,900 human rights defenders, journalists and activists in 119 countries.

The study by the United Nations agency that promotes women's rights, gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls follows a similar report by the UN cultural and educational agency UNESCO in 2021 that highlighted the same issue.

"Online violence against women has become a growing global crisis. What starts on a screen can quickly escalate into harassment, intimidation and even harm in the real world," the report said.

Female writers, influencers and social media content providers who focus on human rights are more often affected by such online violence, through the use of new tools such as fake images or manipulated content, according to the study conducted with partners such as the European Commission. /CNA
