UN issues new warning: Earth's climate is more unbalanced than ever

The UN weather agency has warned that the Earth's climate is more unbalanced than at any other time in recorded history.

The World Meteorological Organization says our planet is gaining far more heat energy than it can give off, driven by emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. This record energy "imbalance" warmed the ocean to new levels last year and continued to melt our planet's glaciers.

Scientists fear that a natural warming phase, called El Nino, expected to begin later this year, could soon bring further heat records.

In response to the report, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated his call for countries to move away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy to provide climate security, energy security and national security.

"Planet Earth is being pushed beyond its limits. Every key climate indicator is glowing red," Guterres warned. 

The World Meteorological Organization says the past 11 years were the Earth's 11 warmest years on record dating back to 1850.

In 2025, average global air temperatures were about 1.43 degrees Celsius above those of "pre-industrial" times, before humans began burning large amounts of fossil fuels./ CNA
