Study: Poor regions in Europe face health risks from air pollution

The poorest regions in Europe face greater health risks from air pollution, according to a new study.

The study shows that areas with higher levels of poverty and lower use of renewable energy have the highest risk of mortality related to air pollution.

According to the lead researcher, it's not just that these regions are more polluted, but also that the population is more vulnerable.

Wealthier regions typically have more advanced health systems, better public health programs, higher awareness of the dangers of pollution, and greater capacity to implement environmental policies.

The study was conducted by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health in collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and analyzed over 88 million deaths in 31 European countries during the period 2003-2019.

The results show that the risk from air pollution depends not only on the level of pollution, but also on how vulnerable the population is./CNA
