A 'super flu' is threatening European health systems

The flu has spread across Europe, with health systems in some countries already being tested by the rapid recording of infections.

Scientists recall that response time is critical: vaccination, early diagnosis and system readiness are prerequisites for limiting the effects of a wave, which this year is predicted to be difficult.

The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) warned that an increase in hospitalisations is already being recorded in some countries, with an emphasis on people aged 65 and over.

The "model", however, of the early entry of influenza into the community is almost the same throughout the Old Continent: circulation is initially highest in children aged 5 to 14, who constitute the "vehicle" for continued transmissions to senior citizens.

The same data from the Center confirms that the K subtype of influenza A (H3N2) is the cause of this year's "increases" in cases.

It is enough to consider that in Britain alone, an average of around 2,600 new cases are confirmed every day, with the leadership of the Ministry of Health there expressing fears that during the holiday season, hospital admissions could triple, putting the system (NHS) to the test.

It is worth noting in any case that the ECDC assesses that the risk for the general population is moderate. However, for those belonging to high-risk groups it is high. In particular, the elderly, pregnant women and those suffering from chronic diseases should create a "protection zone". /CNA
