January 2026, among the five warmest ever recorded globally

The new year began with January 2026 being among the five warmest ever recorded, the European Copernicus observatory reported today, despite a cold wave in the northern hemisphere that prompted a reaction from major political leaders.

"January 2026 was the fifth warmest January on record globally, with the average surface air temperature reaching 12.95° C, 0.51° C higher than the January average for the period 1991-2020," the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said in its monthly bulletin.

January 2026 was only 0.28°C colder than January 2025, the warmest ever recorded, and 1.47°C warmer than the average for the period 1850-1900, as defined by the pre-industrial era.

"January 2026 was a stark reminder that the climate system can sometimes cause very cold weather in one area and extreme heat in another at the same time," said Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service. /CNA
