Onion is the most consumed vegetable in our country.

Onions are part of the Allium botanical family. This vegetable has been with mankind for 5000 years.

For many years, onions have been used for their many medicinal values.

As such, every Albanian consumer may have encountered the phenomenon of onions with sprouts at least once in their life.

Whenever this happens, doubts are inevitable: should the sprouted onion be used or should it be thrown in the trash or should it be planted in a pot?

Can such an onion be eaten? 

Maybe. If the onion has put out roots and small shoots, it may still be edible.

Some people like the taste of the onion that pierces through the green sprout.

Vegetarians love such onions because of the high level of protein) while some others say that the taste is too bitter.

It happens that the sprouts are not always green. Often they are white.

If you face such a situation, cut the onion in half and remove the sprout.

Check for mold or rotting, especially if the onion has been sitting for more than a week.

If you notice some mold, cut off the affected part and consume the rest.

If the onion is mushy, immediately throw it in the bin.

Onions must be stored at a cool temperature, otherwise they will immediately begin to sprout.

The use of sprouts

Onion sprouts can be removed and used in salads and soups. You can remove the sprouts by cutting the onion lengthwise.

If you like sprouts, then place the onion in a container of water (root side) to encourage more sprouts to sprout and use them in salads.

If the onion has no sprouts but is wet in the root part, then it has started to rot.

Storage of onions

You can store onions in a well-ventilated place away from heat and light.

This vegetable does not need to be stored in the refrigerator, except in cases where you have bought green onions.

You can choose a straw basket or a net, which guarantee optimal air circulation.

Onions can last up to a month if you keep them in optimal conditions.

Fresh onions have a shorter shelf life. If you store them in the fridge, they will last for a week.
