The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized the urgent use of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for children starting at six months of age.

International media explain that the authorization in the US to vaccinate children over 6 months came after the positive opinions expressed by groups of experts in recent days.

"Many families, not to mention doctors and health professionals, have been waiting a long time for this decision and in this way we will help protect this age group," said FDA Commissioner Robert Califf.

"As we have seen with older age groups we expect vaccines for younger children to provide protection against the more serious outcomes of COVID-19, such as hospitalization and death," he added.

The WHO, meanwhile, has defended the initiative, saying the current vaccines are highly effective.
