Massive pollution on Velipoja beach/ Shkodra Municipality launches action to clean the sandbank
For the past week, the beach of Velipoja has been affected...

At a time when old crafts are fading in the face of the fast pace of modernity, one of the oldest traditions of the area, birch weaving, continues to live on in Korça. In a simple workshop, amidst the scent of damp wood and tools that show years of work, Avni Kallo has remained faithful to this craft for more than half a century.
He is one of the last craftsmen who still practices it with the same love as the day he started, turning birch into baskets, baskets, furniture and handicrafts that are today in demand in markets both at home and abroad. For Avniu, birch is not just a working material, but part of his family's history and identity. He has continued to keep it alive, working every day and preserving a part of the culture of the Korça area that today risks being lost forever.
In an interview with CNA, Avniu says that the main material he uses is birch, also known as perteka. It used to be planted, but today it is mainly found near rivers. For some of the products, a type of Italian perteka is used, which is softer and more suitable for work. While for chairs, tables and lampshades, bamboo is needed, which is not found locally and is difficult to obtain. Birch is used for baskets, baskets, bottle weaving and other handicraft items.
"We call it birch or pertekë. We used to plant this, but now it is in the rivers. It is an Italian pertekë that is not found here and we plant it, it is softer and better. But the bamboo with which chairs are made is not found here. Baskets, bottle baskets, baskets are made with birch, while for chairs, tables, lampshades we have to use bamboo. It is softer, we soften it in water and it lasts 2 hours without drying out," said Kallo.
There are very few masters of this craft left in Korça, only 3 to 4 people. Avniu shows that the interest of young people exists, but the tradition is dying out and needs support. He himself is willing to teach young people, as he believes that this craft can provide a stable income for anyone who learns it and practices it with passion.
"No, there aren't many like my job, there are 3-4 people. This tradition is gradually being lost. If the government supports me with a project, I will teach it to students. Young people are interested because this craft doesn't leave you without bread. For me, this craft is a passion and a tradition that I inherited from my parents. At that time, that generation, when they were unemployed, traded horses and donkeys and would go to the river, cut perch and make baskets and go out to the village to sell them ," he said.
Do t’i bësh cungimin, do ta presësh me sëpatë", tha ai.
For him, every basket, every basket or every piece of hand-woven furniture is not only a product of work, but a part of the family's history and the identity of Korça. And as long as there are hands willing to learn, he is ready to pass on this heritage to the generations to come, with the hope that the tradition of birch will continue to live on for many years to come. /CNA
