The Municipality of Vau i Dejës officially opened the tourist season in a special cultural evening by reenacting the “Skenderbeg Wedding” on the ancient stones in the church of Dejës just like 574 years ago. In this sacred place, some historians believe that our national hero married the daughter of Gjergj Arianiti, prince of Kanina of Vlorë, on April 26, 1451, and not in Ardenica.
This celebration was joined by a fair with traditional clothing and food from the area, adding to its value and being an open invitation for visitors to come to Vau Dejës and enjoy the culture and traditions of that area. The invitation was made by the mayor of the municipality there, Kristian Shkreli.
"Honorable local and central representatives, elected deputies, citizens of Vau i Dejës, dear guests, visitors, friends of our nature, history and culture. Today, we are in a sacred place – not only for the religious symbolism it carries, but also for the history and identity of this region. It is an honor and a special pleasure that today, we are all together to officially open the tourist season in one of the most blessed areas by nature and history – in the heart of Vau i Dejës. This is not just a tourist season. But it is an invitation to rediscover the treasures of this area – the lakes, the mountains, the traditions, the cuisine, the rare hospitality and above all, the kindness of our residents. From the enchanting waters of Koman to the old villages with history, Vau i Dejës has everything to become a unique destination for every visitor. “The Wedding of Gjergj Kastrioti and Donika Arani” is more than a performance – it is a return to our heroic roots and an embrace of national pride. The artistic interpretation of the “Rugova” ensemble from Peja will give us the opportunity to hear the special voice of the baritone Lukë Mllugja and the emotion of the singer Savjana Vjerdha, under the sounds of the piano of maestro Markelian Kapedani – whom I thank for their presence and contribution. Because tourism for us is not only culture and economy, but also identity. It is our way of showing how a municipality can grow without losing tradition, how natural beauty can go hand in hand with sustainable development and the preservation of our heritage. Today I want to thank all those who work every day to improve infrastructure, to provide better services, to promote our area – from tourist operators, guesthouses, farmers to young people who have returned to invest in their homeland. You are the energy that makes this area move forward. And while we are talking about infrastructure, I cannot leave out the reconstruction of the Koman road. A strategic project that will better connect communities, open the way for more visitors to Lake Koman and the Albanian Alps, and bring sustainable development to the entire area. This investment is not just asphalt – it is hope for residents, convenience for tourists, and a concrete step towards our vision for a modern, connected and economically vibrant municipality. Dear friends, the season we open today is not just symbolic – it is an open invitation for all Albanians and foreigners to come and see the beauty we have here. We are ready to welcome you! Residents of Vau Dejës, all of you are the best ambassadors of this land. Hospitality, kindness, preservation of tradition and love for nature are what make Vau Dejës irreplaceable on the tourist map of Albania. Let this season be another step towards sustainable development, towards a stronger, more vibrant, more promoted and more united Vau i Dejës.Thank you all for the trust, cooperation and love you show for this place. Happy tourist season! Welcome to Vau i Dejës", said Mayor Shkreli.
Chairman of the Shkodra District Council, Edmond Ndou, said that this fair is more than an activity, it is a reflection of the pride of the country.
“ It is a pleasure to be among you to greet this festive evening at the summer fair, which is much more than a festive activity. It is a reflection of pride for our country, for everything we represent as a community united in history and art. Today, here we exhibit not only local products, the art of traditional cuisine, but also talent and creativity, love and our rich heritage. All of this comes to life in an atmosphere that speaks to every generation and that invites everyone to share and celebrate together. A special greeting goes to the mayor of Vau Dejës, Kristian Shkreli, to the organizers, artists, young people, sounds, songs and stage art who with dedication and love have made this festive evening possible. This evening has a special symbolism through the wedding of Skanderbeg as it recalls roots, history and unity. This evening is what makes us proud of our country and confident in the future. Let this fair be a call to protect and promote the values "Our best. Let it also be a very important step towards the development of cultural and economic tourism. A good tourist season for Vau Dejësi, Shkodra and the entire region, " said Ndou.
The deputy of the upcoming legislature, Marjana Koçeku, who was invited to the event, thanked the residents for keeping culture alive.
" Thank you for the organization and the invitation. It is a pleasure to be among you and a pleasure for me to be one of you because I come from a village that is part of the Vau Dejës municipality. I have a big thank you to you locals who have not left this place despite the challenges and difficulties of the time. A thank you also to those producers who have produced from this land and who have kept our culture, arts and crafts alive and who inherit it with great kindness to future generations. Thank you also to the mayor of the Vau Dejës municipality for such activities that make us remember who we were, who we are and how much we must stick to our identity and culture of our roots and these places ", said Koçek.
Part of the event was also the diplomat from Kosovo, Vlora Ademi, who said it was the most special wedding she has ever attended.
“ You residents of Vau Dejës, with your work, give meaning to this place and have become today's Gjergj Kastriotas and today's Donikas for whom we must take care. Today, with the deepest feelings of gratitude and humility, I am accepting the title of 'Honorary Citizen' of Vau Dejës. This appreciation touches my heart and of course connects me to my homeland, a spiritual connection to this noble place connected with work, faith and dignity. Vau Dejës is not simply a beautiful place in the geography of Albania but it is a sacred ground of history and our national land. On this land, Gjergj Kastrioti placed the crown as a symbol of the unity and sovereignty of the Albanian people. This place holds the memory of a glory that inspires us even today, our efforts for justice, unity and human unity. Being honored by this city that preserves the trace of our national hero is more than an appreciation, it is a call for loyalty to good and a push to serve more, more deeply and more sincerely. I thank you for this honor and may God bless Vau Dejësi, may God bless our Albania ", said Nikson Shabani, representative of Albanian Catholics in Austria.

" I am introducing myself here today with the Mirdita dress through traditional products. In recent years, I have started participating in fairs, but before I worked at home for children, our family and relatives. These dresses take a lot of time. The raw material is found on the market, while the part of the zhgun that we call it, that is, the thick fabric, is not found to make the Mirdita sweater as it used to be. As for the market, there are clients from abroad, refugees but also the Mirdita people themselves who live with this dress. They buy it for children, mothers or even for the dead by burying them in traditional clothing. I inherited this from my mother and grandmother ," said Marjana Jakini, an artisan from Vau i Dejës.
The official opening of the tourist season in Vau e Dejës was attended by many different personalities, while the party continued until late hours. The Church of St. Mary, where it is thought that it may be the place where Skanderbeg crowned his love with Donika, was built in the 13th century. That church was the only one of the Romanesque style that was preserved in Albania until communism demolished it with TNT in 1967, thus causing a great loss of cultural heritage./ CNA
