The leaders of six Western Balkan countries, including Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, were received at St. James's Palace in London as part of the Berlin Process Summit.

Delegations from Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia are participating in a summit held as part of the Berlin Process, launched in 2014 to keep Southeast European countries on track towards membership in the European Union.

Next, the leaders will meet with British and European officials for talks on migration, security and economic growth in an unstable region where Russia seeks to exert influence.

The only Western Balkan country to join the EU is Croatia, which became a member in 2013. Progress for the others has stalled, with countries at different stages of the journey, and in recent years tensions have flared between Serbia and Kosovo.

The EU's openness to accepting new members has grown since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. There are concerns that the war in Ukraine and Russia's deepening confrontation with the West could spill over into a region still plagued by its own conflicts. /CNA
