New archaeological evidence suggests Pompeii was repopulated after devastating

New evidence strongly suggests that Pompeii was repopulated after the devastating eruption of 79 AD, a theory long speculated upon but now supported by archaeological evidence.

Although the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD reduced Pompeii to a city of ashes, killing up to a fifth of its 20,000 inhabitants and leaving it in ruins, new evidence suggests that some survivors returned to the charred ruins to rebuild their lives.

New excavations from the Insula Meridionalis (South Block) of the archaeological park have revealed post-explosion modifications to buildings, signs of domestic activity, and adaptive reuse of ruins.

Researchers now believe that this community lived in makeshift conditions after the eruption, transforming the ruined houses into a kind of survival settlement.

The upper floors were re-inhabited, while the ground levels, once elegant Roman spaces, were reused as basements with ovens and mills. /CNA
