Astronomers have discovered the earliest seeds of rocky planets forming in the gas around a small sun-like star, offering a precious glimpse into the dawn of our solar system.

It's an unprecedented glimpse of "time zero," scientists reported Wednesday, when young worlds begin to coalesce.

NASA's Webb Space Telescope and the European Southern Observatory in Chile teamed up to detect these early planetary formation particles around the young star known as HOPS-315.

It is a yellow object in formation like the sun, but much younger, 100,000 to 200,000 years old and about 1,370 light-years away. A single light-year is six trillion miles.

A gap in the outer part of the disk allowed the inside to be seen, thanks to the way the star is tilted towards Earth.

They discovered silicon monoxide gas, as well as crystalline silicate minerals, the ingredients for what are believed to be the first solid materials that formed in our solar system more than 4.5 billion years ago.

The action takes place in a location comparable to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, which contains the remaining building blocks of the planets of our solar system. /CNA
