Photo/ Rare turtle appears on Saranda beach

A rare event has thrilled vacationers on the beach of Saranda. A sea turtle of the Caretta caretta species, otherwise known as the green turtle, has appeared on the coast.

Vacationers did not hesitate to approach and photograph this rare marine species that was seen today on the Albanian coast.

The loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta is a marine species that occurs in practically all subtropical and temperate waters of the planet, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Currently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the loggerhead sea turtle as endangered, mainly due to the decline of the species and threats to its breeding grounds, which means that year after year, their numbers are decreasing.

Caretta caretta sea turtles are highly migratory and range across a multitude of habitats during their 45-year lifespan. /CNA
