On a remote hill in Turkey, where the human voice is lost behind canyons and curves, the residents of Ku?köy have found an unusual way to communicate: they whistle.

In Ku?köy, a small village in the northeast of the country, the language is not expressed in words, but in sounds that resemble the chirping of birds. Hence the name – “bird village”.

The whistled language they use, known as Ku? Dili, has existed for centuries. It is essentially Turkish translated into sounds: every phrase, word, and even tone of voice is conveyed by whistles, which travel more easily over difficult terrain. The language was invented by farmers and shepherds who needed to communicate over long distances, mainly in areas where the voice signal did not reach, but the air carried the sound.

This phenomenon is not unique worldwide, but the case of Cusco stands out. In 2017, UNESCO recognized the whistled language as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. And yet, it is in danger of being lost. The younger generation is abandoning the tradition, while technology (mobile phones, Wi-Fi, apps) is changing the way people communicate, even in the most isolated villages.

Despite efforts by teachers and communities to preserve the language through classes and festivals, its everyday use is declining dramatically. Many fear that within a few decades it will belong only to memory and a few recordings.

The whistled language is not a tourist attraction. It is proof that man, even in the most adverse landscapes, invents ways to communicate. He just has to be willing to listen./CNA
