Today marks the 620th anniversary of the birth of Albania's national hero.
George Kastrioti, born in 1405, was a member of the noble Kastrioti family and a military leader who first fought for the Ottoman Empire and later led several uprisings against it.
One of the sons of the noble Kastriot family, he was kidnapped at the age of 9 by the Ottoman Empire and taken to its court. His childhood was spent in challenges, surviving the politics and intrigues of the Ottoman court, and receiving an education. Known for his excellence and intelligence, he then entered the service of the Sultan for the next twenty years. He rose through the ranks, becoming Sanjakbey of the Sanjak of Dibra in 1440.

In 1443, after long planning and gathering other compatriots, he deserted the Ottoman army during the Battle of Niš and became the ruler of Kruja, a territory from Petrela to Modri?. In 1444, he founded the League of Lezha with the support of the nobility of the time.
In 1451, Skanderbeg signed the Treaty of Gaeta, where he recognized the de jure sovereignty of the Kingdom of Naples over Albania, securing a defensive alliance, although he remained an independent ruler.

In 1460–61 he supported Ferdinand I of Naples in his wars against John II of Anjou. In 1463 he became the commander-in-chief of Pope Pius II's crusading forces, but the pope died while the armies were still being assembled. He fought alongside the Venetians against the Ottomans during the Ottoman–Venetian War of 1463–79, until his death in January 1468.
Skanderbeg stands out as one of the most important commanders in the military history of his time, as the most persistent and always victorious against the Ottoman Empire at its peak./CNA
