Scientists discover new color the human eye can see

Scientists claim to have discovered a new color that has never been seen before by humans. The result comes after an experiment in which US researchers pulsed lasers into their eyes.

Researchers say that by stimulating individual cells in the retina, the laser pushed their perception beyond its natural limits.

The five people who reportedly saw the new color describe it as blue-green, but they added that it doesn't fully represent the richness of the experience.

Ren Ng, an electrical engineer at the University of California, Berkeley, told the Guardian:

"We predicted from the beginning that it would look like an unprecedented color signal, but we didn't know what the brain would do with it. It was jaw-dropping. It's incredibly saturated."

An image of a square was distributed by the researchers to give a sense of color, which they called 'olo'.

It has been emphasized that the hue can only be experienced through laser manipulation of the retina.

Austin Roorda, a vision scientist on the team, said:

 "There's no way to convey that color on an item or on a monitor. The whole point is that this is not the color we see, it just isn't. The color we see is a version of it, but it absolutely pales in comparison to the olo experience."

With this technique, the researchers enabled five people to see a new color, called "olo," which study participants described as an "unprecedentedly saturated blue-green." The researchers, some of whom participated in the experiment themselves, describe their technique and the new color in a study published this weekend in the journal Science Advances. /CNA
