Original Hermes bag sells for 8 million euros at auction in Paris

Some say you can't put a price on the right fashion accessories and style, but the record books from auction houses tell a different story.

The original Birkin bag, named after Jane Birkin, the late actress, singer and fashion icon for whom Hermes created it, has sold for more than 8.6 million euros, becoming the second most valuable fashion item ever sold.

Produced for the London-born star by the Paris fashion house in 1984, the commercialized version of the Birkin bag became one of the most exclusive luxury items in the world, with its extravagant price tag and years-long waiting list.

The bag was the result of a chance meeting on a flight to London in the 1980s with the then head of Hermes, Jean-Louis Dumas.

Birkin recounted in later interviews that the pair began chatting after she spilled some of her belongings on the cabin floor.

Birkin asked Dumas why Hermes didn't make a bigger bag and sketched on a bag on the plane the type of bag she would like.

Described as a "legendary handbag" and "one of the most iconic fashion items ever created," this bag set records. /CNA
