Where do cocktails originate from?

Cocktails became popular in England in the early nineteenth century, but the first edition of a recipe book that included drinks based on alcoholic mixtures was written by the American bartender Jerry Thomas (1830-1885), who published "How to Mix Drinks in 1862" or, "The companion of Bon Vivant". Originally, what distinguished cocktails from other mixed alcoholic drinks was the use of liqueur, a custom that has now been lost.

It was on board the luxury ocean liners, used to cross the ocean from Great Britain to the United States, that the art of mixology spread, in fact here cocktails were created with cognac, brandy, gin and colorful vermouth-based drinks. It wasn't just boredom that drove patrons to the bar on board, the classic whiskey "drink" was actually considered by doctors to be a good remedy for seasickness.

Thus the art of cocktail making landed in the United States, where it was a huge success despite prohibition (1920-1933). In the United States, this policy had the opposite effect, instead of causing a crisis of alcoholic beverages and drunkenness on the high seas, it increased the use of cocktails in this period.

In fact, the quality of the liquor was poor, so advertising bartenders who illegally sold liquor tended to mix the alcohol with other ingredients.

During the ban, shipping companies kicked off the festivities with alcoholic beverages./ CNA
