When was the first "Formula 1" World Championship held?

The Formula 1 World Championship was born in 1950 by the decision of the International Automobile Federation, which created the new category in 1946.

21 drivers took part in the debut race on May 13, 1950 at the Silverstone circuit (England). To protect them there were only helmets with bowls and goggles. The regulation allowed two types of engines: up to 1500 cc of displacement for turbocharged engines and up to 4500 for naturally aspirated engines.

There were no weight or fuel restrictions (refueling during the race took about 30 seconds).

The race numbers assigned to the single seater cars changed from time to time and the front row consisted of 4 cars. The average age of pilots was much higher than today; Luigi Fagioli was 52, Gigi Villoresi 41, Juan Manuel Fangio 39 and Giuseppe Farina (known as Nino) became the first world champion at the age of 44.

Alfa Romeo dominated, winning all the European races: conceived since 1937, it had 350 horsepower.

Previously, in 1925 in Monza, a competition defined as "world" had already taken place, but in a single race: the Alfa Romeo driven by Gastone Brilli-Peri won. Afterwards, single-seater races continued to compete in single events, called Grandes épreuves ("Grand Trials") or Grands Prix ("Grand Prix")./ CNA
