Vampire bats survive by feeding only on blood

Some species of bats that are otherwise called vampires are distinguished by a characteristic suggested by their name: they feed only on blood, what they manage to absorb from their prey.

This means that they get all the energy they need to live from blood, a substance rich in protein but low in fats and sugars, that is, those nutrients that can be stored and used as a reserve in case of need. .

The same does not apply to proteins. A new study published in Biology Letters has analyzed this food choice for the first time, to understand how the metabolism of vampires works.

The problem with proteins, as mentioned, is that they cannot be stored to create energy reserves that can be used when needed.

For this reason, most mammals feed on foods that also contain fats and sugars. For them, protein makes up less than 10% of their total energy needs.
