Viral banana artwork for sale again/ Costs a "mountain" of money

The banana attached to the wall, a work that became viral due to the price at which it was sold in 2019, will be sold again, but not at the price of 120 thousand dollars, but at a full 1.5 million dollars.

This news was announced on Friday by Sotheby's auction house.

"'The Comedian' is a conceptual artwork, and actual physical materials are replaced with each installation," an auction spokesperson said via email.

Cattelan and French art gallery Perrotin made headlines around the world five years ago when they showed The Comedian for a six-figure price at the Art Basel Miami Beach fair.

The original was created using a banana purchased at a Miami thrift store, though the gallery said it could be substituted, per the artist's instructions.

The art world was divided over the work's merits, although some critics saw it as rooted in a rich tradition of conceptual works dating back to Marcel Duchamp's famous mounted urinal that questioned the value of art itself.

Events took an unexpected turn when performance artist David Datuna grabbed the banana from the wall and ate it in front of hundreds of amazed fairgoers. He later defended the act as an artistic performance in its own right, not an act of vandalism.

It was eventually dropped due to public safety concerns, but all three editions were sold at the fair. Two were bought by private collectors for $120,000, while the third was bought for a higher (but undisclosed) amount and later donated to the Guggenheim museum in New York./ CNA
