Banana "work of art"/ Surprising at auction, sold at a staggering

Maurizio Cattelan's provocative artwork, which is nothing more than a banana taped to a wall, has sold for $6.2 million at Sotheby's auction house in New York, four times its previous estimate.

The auction house said Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun left six other rivals behind, taking the Italian artist's installation called "The Comedian" with him.

"In the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience," he said.

The wall hanging banana, now possibly one of the most expensive fruits ever sold, was actually bought earlier in the day on the market for just $0.35.

"The Comedian" was first presented to the public in 2019, instantly becoming a viral sensation and also fueling heated debates about what art is. The installation, which has traveled the world, comes with instructions on how to replace the banana whenever it rots.

In fact, the fruit was eaten not once, but twice. In 2023, a South Korean art student ate it when the installation was displayed at Seoul's Leeum Art Museum. The museum later placed a new banana in the same spot, local media reported. Four years ago, another artist took the banana off the wall and ate it after the work sold for $120,000 at Art Basel in Miami.
