The history of Butrint as an archaeological treasure/ British show dedicated to

A special program is dedicated to Butrint on the BBC Travel Show Qasa Alom.

Titled "Butrint: The Ancient Site That's Helping Albania Regain Its Identity," the British show highlights the beauty of this national park.

This program, above all, addresses the journey of evaluating this archaeological treasure over the years, and mainly the historical journey from the communist past to the present day.

Part of the material dedicated to Butrint:

After a period of turmoil, countries often talk about looking to the future. Yet 40 years after the death of communist dictator Enver Hoxha, Albania is, in many ways, looking back to its distant past. A period of extreme isolation from the 1940s to 1991 led the Balkan nation to close its religious institutions, neglect many of its historic sites and become known as the “North Korea of ??Europe.” But today, Albania is working hard to reclaim its cultural heritage while preserving its natural landscape and embracing its ancient roots.

The more than 2,500-year-old ruins of the city of Butrint are one such example. Dating back to around 800 BC, the site has long stood at the center of the Western world, surviving conflicts, absorbing diverse cultures, and leaving behind numerous layers of history to explore. It was likely a Greek city-state before the Romans expanded it into a bustling city complete with a spa. Later, the Byzantines and Ottomans left their respective marks on it. Butrint’s history tells the story of the changing politics of the Mediterranean and its many cultures and religions, all of which have shaped present-day Albania.

"In 1992, Butrint was the first place in Albania to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site," BBC Travel Show host Qasa Alom explained in a recent episode. "It preserves a piece of rich cultural history that stands beyond the shadow cast by the events of the last century."

Today, the city's many ruins are part of the larger Butrint National Park, which encompasses 93 square kilometers of forested coastal landscape. In addition to the historical site, the park is also home to 1,200 different plant and animal species. Visitors can explore the ruins of a Hellenistic-era theater, admire early Christian monuments, and then hike through the forested hills or sail on the nearby Butrint Lake.

The preservation of the ruins and the surrounding park are the result of a joint effort by organizations such as the Butrint Foundation and the World Monuments Fund. Donations from both groups have helped restore Butrint and protect the surrounding landscape.
