This practice is believed to have been first shared with civilians in the 1981 book Relax and Win: Championship Performance, written by American track and field coach Lloyd Budd Winter.

He hoped the method would help athletes recover faster from injuries and improve their overall performance on the sports field. If you want to try it, it's very simple.

First, you need to get into a comfortable position and after doing this, focus your thoughts on breathing. Then begin to slowly relax your whole body to "turn it off".

Start with the crown, then work your way down to the forehead and face. Make sure your whole body is relaxed, your arms are relaxed and close to your body, and imagine heat spreading from your head to your fingertips.

Then focus on your chest, taking deep breaths to relax. Continue to the stomach, thighs, legs and finally the feet. Imagine the feeling of warmth that "travels" from your heart to the tips of your fingers.

But this is not the whole trick.

To be effective during relaxation, you need to clear your mind of the stress accumulated during the day. You can do this by imagining a calming scenario, such as lying by a lake, on a beach or whatever is comfortable for you. If your mind starts to wander, and it probably will, just hang in there. Repeat "don't think" to yourself for at least ten seconds.
