A treasure is found in a Gothic church in Germany/ Hidden 400 years ago

Restorers of a Gothic church in Germany discovered a treasure hidden in the hollow leg of a church statue that was lost almost 400 years ago.

The treasure consisted of four bags of gold and silver coins.

The four bags of coins from the 1600s were most likely hidden during the Thirty Years' War, when Swedish soldiers often raided the area.

The discovery tells an incredible story, says Ulf Dreger, curator and head of department at the Saxony-Anhalt State Mint.

In that church, Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer who wrote 95 theses against corruption in the Roman Catholic Church, held his last four services in 1546.

A hundred years later, around the 1640s, someone used the church as a treasure house.
