"He paid a high price for his intellectual freedom"/ Venxha: Llazar

Lecturer of the Department of History and Geography at "Fan Noli" University, Metin Venxha, spoke to CNA as part of the symposium "Llazar (Zai) Fundo - a prominent figure of Albanian and European thought" held in Korça.

In a reaction to CNA, Venxha characterized the figure of Llazar Fundo as a dynamic and complex figure.

Professor Venxha further said that Llazar Fundo was a free man, a true democrat, and he paid very dearly for his freedom.

" Llazar Fundo is a personality of the history of Albania in the 20th century. He has made a valuable contribution in the political field, in the intellectual field in the first half of the 20th century in the history of Albania. He is a dynamic, complex figure, who develops his activity in the years 1920-1940, in other words in the years between the two world wars and as such he certainly implements the totalitarian ideologies that were on the agenda in that period not only in Albania but throughout Europe. Llazar Fundo is an intellectual of the first category, he actively participates in what we know as the "June Revolution". He was politically close to Fan Noli, he actively contributes to this revolution, after August 1, 1924 he is also the main leader of the Bashkimi Society, saying that the June Revolution and the Bashkimi Society play the most positive role in 1924, a period where the Albanian state is shaken by 3 important events such as the assassination of Zogu, the murder of the Americans in Mamurras and the murder of Avni Rustemi who was at the same time the leader of the unification society, and then the leadership was taken over by Llazar Fundo. The return of Ahmet Zogu to power in December 1924, caused that together with Fan Noli, their follower and supporter, Fundo also went into migration and the rest of his life until the occupation of Albania in 1939, he stayed in Europe. He returned to Albania, actively participated in the anti-fascist movement as an idealist and in the function of a free democratic Albania, was exiled by the fascists in Italy, returned and his tragic end is because Llazar Fundo was a free man, a true democrat and he paid very dearly for his intellectual freedom , "said Venxha./ CNA
