At least 44 people have been killed in a massive fire that engulfed public housing apartments in Hong Kong's Tai Po district, with more than 270 people still missing.
Two directors and a consultant of a construction company were arrested by police for “gross negligence.” The complex was undergoing extensive renovations when the fire started.
Police said they found polystyrene boards blocking the windows and suspect that they, along with building materials, may have allowed the fire to spread so quickly.
After 18 hours, officials said the fire was under control, and it has been classified as a level five fire, the most serious level in Hong Kong.
According to a 2021 census, nearly 40% of the 4,600 people living in the apartment complex are at least 65 years old or older.
Some of them have lived in the subsidized public housing complex since it was built in the 1980s.
This is considered the deadliest fire in Hong Kong in at least 63 years. The deadliest fire ever recorded occurred in 1948 where 176 people lost their lives./ CNA
