Death toll from Hong Kong tragedy rises/ 279 people still trapped in burning

The death toll from a fire that ripped through a Hong Kong apartment complex has risen to 36. Seven of the eight buildings in the complex, which is home to a large number of residents, are reportedly still on fire.

Foreign media reports that firefighters are still unable to reach 279 residents trapped on the upper floors. Meanwhile, 29 people are hospitalized, seven of whom are in critical condition, officials said.

It is the deadliest fire in Hong Kong in nearly three decades. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee, who described the incident as a disaster, said in a statement that about 900 residents affected by the fire had sought temporary shelter.

Police have set up a task force to investigate the cause of the fire, Lee said, adding that authorities will investigate whether protective coatings that were used to protect the buildings during a recent renovation were in compliance with fire safety standards. /CNA
