Russia on Thursday welcomed the new US administration's decision to close USAID as an independent agency, calling the organization a "machine for interference" in global affairs.
"The only thing we get some satisfaction from is that everything we said turned out to be true," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a weekly briefing, referring to Moscow's long-standing criticism of the agency.
Russia expelled USAID in 2012 for "meddling" in its politics. Russia had long accused the agency of creating the ground for pro-democracy uprisings in former Soviet states.
"It is anything but an aid, development and assistance agency. It is a machine for interfering in internal affairs, it is a mechanism for changing regimes, the political order, the state structure," Zakharova said.
Elon Musk called USAID “a viper’s nest of radical leftist Marxists who hate America.” Meanwhile, Trump said last week that the organization was being run by a “bunch of radical lunatics.” /CNA
