Pam Bondi sworn in as attorney general as Justice Department prepares for major shakeup

Pam Bondi was sworn in as attorney general on Wednesday, taking charge of the Justice Department as it braces for turmoil with President Donald Trump seeking to impose his will on an agency that has long provoked his ire.

The ceremony, held in the Oval Office, was the first time the Republican president had attended the swearing-in of a Cabinet member for a second term. It was further evidence of Trump's deep personal interest in the operations of the department that investigated him during his first term and then filed two dropped lawsuits after he left office in 2021.

Before Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas administered the oath of office, Trump praised Bondi's record as a prosecutor and said she would restore "fair, equal and impartial justice to the department."

Bondi told the president she wouldn't let him down. "I'm going to make you proud and I'm going to make this country proud," she said. /CNA
