The Ukrainian army withdraws from the strategic city of Vuledar

The Ukrainian army has confirmed on Wednesday that it has withdrawn from the strategic city of Vuledar, in the east of the country.

"The high command has given permission for the withdrawal of units from Vuledar, in order to preserve personnel and combat equipment, and to take position for further operations," said the Ukrainian ground forces formation Hortitsia, which commands eastern regions including Donetsk.

Russian forces launched repeated attacks around the city to destroy Ukrainian defenses, threatening to encircle the city, the command said.

Moscow's troops, vastly outnumbered and equipped, have been slowly advancing in eastern Ukraine despite heavy losses. Meanwhile, Ukraine has repeatedly pleaded with its Western allies to provide it with more advanced weapons and allow it to strike military targets deeper inside Russia.

Vuledar, an abandoned town with a pre-war population of around 14,000, has been at the center of a fierce battle since Moscow launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The hilltop town has been almost completely destroyed, but it remains strategically important for protecting Russia's supply routes and can serve as a springboard to Pokrovsk, a communications hub about 80 kilometers to the north, which Moscow has been intending to conquer it for months.

Russian Telegram channels posted videos of troops waving the Russian flag over destroyed buildings in Vuledar./ REL
