Ukraine demands a "strong" decision from NATO at the Washington summit

Ukraine wants NATO to take a "strong" decision at a NATO summit in Washington next month as Kiev moves forward with its strategic bid to join the military alliance, the foreign policy adviser of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ihor Zhovkva told "Reuters" that Kiev wants the NATO summit to end with concrete results.

"I think that the summit deserves to have a strong decision, including for Ukraine. Because if it lacks strong decisions on Ukraine, the summit will be in vain," he said in Kiev late Monday.

He did not specify what he thought such a decision would entail.

Zelensky, meanwhile, has said Kiev should be invited to join NATO at this year's summit in Washington, after failing to receive an invitation to the 2023 summit in Vilnius despite lobbying.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg and Washington have both said they do not expect the 32-member alliance to invite Kiev to join it during the July 9-11 summit.

But Stoltenberg has said he hopes the summit will show that Ukraine is moving closer to membership.

Allies have discussed the possible text of the summit declaration, which could send such a signal, declaring that Ukraine's path to NATO is "irreversible".

"We deserve a strong decision. Any NATO decision requires agreement. All of us know this, and we understand that maybe this time, there will be reconciliation again on the last day before the summit", said Zhovkva./ REL
