Chinese leader Xi calls for raising the standard of the army

Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for the country's armed forces to act quickly to achieve "world-class standards".

He made the comments in a speech on Wednesday, days after warning that the country was threatened by a US-led campaign to "contain, isolate and suppress China".

Mr Xi's speech to delegates of a ceremonial assembly representing the People's Liberation Army, the military wing of the ruling Communist Party, as well as the paramilitary People's Armed Police, was carried by the official Xinhua news agency.

The Chinese leader, who is also the head of the party and the commission that controls the armed forces, also mentioned the need to "achieve the targets by the centenary of the People's Liberation Army in 2027".

According to some American observers, Beijing aims by then to have the ability to invade Taiwan, a self-governing island and a US ally that is militarily aided by Washington./VOA
