European Union states have agreed to speed up shipments of artillery supplies and buy more ammunition to help Ukraine, but still have to work out how to turn those goals into reality.

Under a plan drawn up by foreign minister Josep Borrell, EU states will receive €1 billion in financial incentives to send more of the artillery they have to Kiev, while another €1 billion will be used to buy common ammunition.

Gjithçka duhet të diskutohet në detaje”, tha Borrell, pas takimit të ministrave të Mbrojtjes së BE-së në Stokholm, mbledhje në të cilin mori pjesë edhe ministri i Mbrojtjes së Ukrainës, Oleksii Reznikov.

Borrell tha se shpreson që plani të finalizohet gjatë takimit të ministrave të Jashtëm dhe të Mbrojtjes më 20 mars.

Reznikov u bëri thirrje ministrave në Stokholm që të mbështesin planin estonian për shtetet e BE-së, në mënyrë që ato të bëhen bashkë dhe të blejnë 1 milion fishekë 155-milimetërsh këtë vit me një kosto prej 4 miliard eurosh, në mënyrë që forcat ukrainase të mund të nisin kundërofensivë ndaj forcave ruse.

Borrell's plan is smaller in scale but still represents a major step for the EU as defense procurement is widely seen as an individual matter for member state governments.

EU officials said the bloc would place a large order on behalf of all member governments in order to buy weapons at a cheaper price.

However, officials are still working out the details of how the entire process will be financed and who will lead the process of purchasing the weapons from the companies that produce them.

Ukraine is spending more rounds than allies can produce, officials said, prompting the EU to look at ways to increase production.
