Tunisia has denied entry to a European Parliament delegation after EU lawmakers criticized an agreement the country signed with Brussels to stem the tide of migration, officials said Thursday.
Lawmakers from the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs have planned to go to the North African country on a fact-finding mission.
However, in a letter seen by the AFP news agency, the Tunisian Foreign Ministry said that the lawmakers will not be allowed to enter, due to "numerous dilemmas" regarding the visit.
"We condemn the decision of the Tunisian authorities to refuse entry to the delegation", said this five-member delegation, through a statement.
"This behavior is unprecedented in Tunisia, since the democratic revolution of 2011."
This incident is reported after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the EU and Tunisia in July, with the aim of limiting illegal migration through the Mediterranean.
Under the agreement – ??pushed forward by Italy – Brussels has pledged to allocate hundreds of millions of euros in financial aid to the Government in Tunisia.
In a debate this week, EU lawmakers criticized the deal with an authoritarian government that has been accused of abusing migrants in sub-Saharan Africa.
The European Commission, the EU's executive body, has defended the deal, saying it restored cooperation with a key partner.
Tunisia is the country from where thousands of migrants depart with the aim of reaching the countries of the European bloc./ REL
