Trump criticizes NATO and allies for role in Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has again criticized international allies, accusing NATO of not doing enough to ensure maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House before departing for Florida, Trump described the situation as a simple military maneuver, but stressed that more ships and support from allies are required.

“A lot of help is needed… NATO can help us, but so far they haven't had the courage to do so,” he said.

Trump also reiterated his stance that the US is not completely dependent on this sea route, while mentioning Japan and China as countries that, in his opinion, should be more involved in securing global oil transportation.

As for the United Kingdom, Trump did not change his position, repeating criticism that London reacted too late despite allowing the use of its bases for American operations in the region.

His comments come at a time of high tensions with Iran, as the US seeks greater international support to secure one of the world's most important energy routes./ CNA
