Typhoon Ragasa approaches Hong Kong/ 700 flights canceled, 400,000 evacuated

Typhoon Ragasa is maintaining its intensity as it approaches Hong Kong after killing at least three people while passing through the northern Philippines.

Hong Kong authorities have issued their third highest typhoon warning and cancelled at least 700 flights, with severe disruption expected from 6pm today.

The storm, described by weather forecasters as the most powerful on Earth so far this year, is packing maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h and gusts of up to 230 km/h, according to the Philippine weather agency Pagasa.

The typhoon is forecast to maintain its current strength over the next 24 hours before weakening slightly as it approaches the Chinese coast.

At least three people died in the Philippines and thousands were displaced as the super typhoon caused widespread flooding, landslides and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure in all affected regions.

Schools were closed and residents stockpiled food in Hong Kong and Macau. The nearby Chinese technology hub, Shenzhen, has ordered the evacuation of 400,000 people. /CNA
