Starmer vows to close 'criminal highway' bringing migrants through

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to close the criminal "highway" through the Western Balkans that is flooding Britain with migrants.

The Prime Minister will host leaders from the region today in an effort to crack down on smuggling gangs behind the increase in crossings across the English Channel.

He told The Sun newspaper that traffickers had built a criminal empire spanning across Europe, which the UK must shut down.

Ministers had hoped to unveil an agreement on return centers at the summit.

But a government source said ministers first needed to reduce crime and stabilise border security in the region.

The Prime Minister said: “There is a criminal highway running through the Western Balkans, taking illegal immigrants directly to the United Kingdom.

"Our job is to shut it down and destroy the gangs that run it."

Britain is now deploying drones at checkpoints across the Balkans to stop smugglers on the spot.
