Starmer: UK will not join Iran war

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appeared at a press conference where he also spoke about the war in Iran. Starmer stated that Britain has clear and ongoing objectives and the first priority is the protection of the British people in the region.

He stressed that the United Kingdom will not be involved in the wider war and that it will continue to work for a swift resolution to stop the Iranian threat.

The prime minister says it is clear that the US operation has massively weakened Iran's military capability, but added that after the conflict, some kind of negotiated agreement will be needed that limits Iran's ability to rebuild its nuclear program and secure international maritime transport.

He says the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened to ensure stability in the markets.

"This is no simple task and that is why the UK is working with all our allies to bring forward a workable plan to restore freedom of navigation in the region," he says.

Starmer was asked by reporters whether Britain would commit to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open after Trump's request for support in securing the sea route.

The Prime Minister says he spoke to Trump on the phone yesterday and that there have been discussions about a workable plan, but added that it is not easy or straightforward. Regarding his relationship with Trump, Starmer said it is a good relationship.

"We are strong allies; we have been for decades. But it is up to me to act in what I consider to be the best interests of Britain. If you are prime minister, you have no right to come back a week later and say - oops, I made a mistake about that war, can I back out now?" Starmer said. /CNA
