The number of people seeking protection in Germany has fallen significantly, according to new government figures.
It is reported that around 3.53 million people with protection status were living in Germany as of December 31, around 17,000 fewer than a year earlier. This is the first time the number has fallen since 2011.
Officials said one reason for the decline is that fewer people seeking protection have recently arrived in Europe overall.
Border controls have also contributed to the decline. Although checks are not normally foreseen within the Schengen area, Germany has introduced controls along all its land borders and increased the intensity of inspections. /CNA
