EP corruption scandal/ Qatar again denies involvement

Qatar again denied on Sunday that it is involved in a corruption case being investigated by Belgian authorities involving people linked to the European Parliament.

Belgian authorities have accused four people connected to the European Parliament of receiving money from World Cup organizer Qatar to influence decisions in its favor. Among them was the vice-president of the European Parliament, the Greek MP, Eva Kaili.

Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to end her term in office.

Qatar has previously denied doing so.

Qatar was "exclusively criticized and attacked" in the investigation and is deeply disappointed that the Belgian government "made no effort to engage with our government to establish the facts," the statement said.

A spokesman for the European Parliament declined to comment on the allegation.
Spokesmen for the Belgian Ministry of Justice and the Federal Prosecutor's Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The ministry said on Wednesday that its intelligence service has been working closely with other European countries for more than a year to uncover the corruption scandal./ VOA
