UN chief condemns Israeli airstrikes on Syria

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Wednesday's airstrikes by Israel on Suwayda, Deraa and Damascus, Syria.

In a statement by Guterres' spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief also denounced the redeployment of forces in the Golan Heights by the Israeli military.

"Guterres calls for an immediate cessation of all violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for respect for the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement," Dujarric said.

The Israeli military launched airstrikes on the Syrian Defense Ministry and near the presidential palace in the capital Damascus today, killing at least three people and wounding 34 others.

The attacks come after Israel threatened to increase attacks if Syrian government forces do not withdraw from the south of the country where there has been fighting between Druze and security forces. /CNA
