Iceland volcano erupts/ Evacuations of area near Blue Lagoon

A volcanic eruption this Wednesday near Sundhnuksgígar in Iceland forced the evacuation of the Grindavík area and damaged tourism at Iceland's renowned Blue Lagoon geothermal center.

An eruption began around 04:00 local time, the ninth to occur in the area since December 2023.

Campers were seen quickly gathering as lava began to flow from a 700-meter-long fissure, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Visitors to the nearby Blue Lagoon resort were also asked to leave after levels of gas pollution rose near the site of the explosion.

While the explosion is not near any infrastructure, emergency crews remain on standby.

Grindavík, regularly affected by recent volcanic activity, was completely evacuated as a precaution./ CNA
