A flurry of snow, ice, winds and plummeting temperatures created dangerous travel conditions in the central and southern US states up to the east coast of the country, forcing the closure of schools and government institutions in several states.
Snow and ice blanketed major roads in Kansas, western Nebraska and parts of Indiana, where the state's National Guard was called in to help stranded travelers. At least 8 inches of snow was expected, along with winds of up to 45 mph.
The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings from Kansas to Missouri to New Jersey.
"Some areas in this region will get the heaviest amounts of snow, this could be the heaviest precipitation in at least a decade," the weather service said.
The polar vortex of extremely cold air usually revolves around the North Pole. People in the United States, Europe and Asia experience its intense cold when air currents shift south.
Studies show that rapid warming in the Arctic is partly responsible for the increasing frequency of the polar vortex that expands its icy influence.
Lessons in schools are cancelled
Schools were widely closed on Monday. Districts in Indiana, Virginia and Kentucky announced class cancellations Sunday afternoon.
Public schools in Kentucky canceled classes, extracurricular activities and sports for nearly 100,000 students.
Schools were also closed in Maryland, where Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency on Sunday and announced that state institutions would be closed on Monday.
"The safety of Marylanders is our priority. Please do not drive during this storm. Take precautions for your family and home and charge your communication devices in the event of a power outage," Mr. Moore said in a statement. /VOA
